Tasty Sandwiches for $6 and Under
When we think of a sandwich, white toast and cold cuts are some of the first things that come to mind. Chances are your connotations of a sandwich are somewhat similar to ours, but not all sandwiches have to be so dull. Enter Katie Robbins from Serious Eats. She put together a list of 14 sandwiches for $6 or under in LA that look (and taste!) absolutely awesome. You can see her article and all 14 sandwiches after the jump (one of them is even an Underground Food favorite!).

Biergarten. Los Angeles, CA
*206 N Western Ave Los Angeles, CA 90004*
What do you get when you combine a British pub, a German staple of mugs and goblets of delicious draught beer, and Korean influenced bar food? Apparently Biergarten. Located in the Mid-Wilshire district (better known as Korea Town) of LA, Biergarten gives LA locals a low-key place to watch the game, have a brewski and grub on some delicious fusion treats.
We adventured out to Biergarten on a Wednesday night, and quickly noticed that the locals don’t wait for the weekend to come out to enjoy this fun and friendly atmosphere. We got in around 7pm and by the time we ordered some cold beers and appetizers, a good crowd was flowing in to catch that night’s Laker and Clipper games.
After a long day of work, the first thing we glanced to was the drink menu. Much to our delight, we found an awesome selection of draught beers that included some of our favorites such as St. Bernardus, Triple Karmeliet, and a California Hefeweizen.
Then came the decision of which food items to get. A friend had suggested the Drunken Chicken, which is prepared with various spices, zesty citruses and a can of beer... so we had to get this. After much debate about what else to order, we went with the Kalbi Quesadilla, the Balsamic Onion Sliders, and the Würstche plate. As if this wasn’t enough food, we were started off with some freshly made potato chips with an exceptional jalapeno mayo sauce.
As we had expected (and as we often do), once the food came out, our thoughts of waaay over ordering were confirmed. But all that meant was we’d have an awesome lunch the next day! First came the Drunken Chicken. Brought to the table uncut on a plate, our server carved the bird in front of us, making us salivate more and more as he separated the pieces of chicken. Although a bit disappointed that we couldn’t taste the flavor of the beer too much (the entrée’s name is “Drunken Chicken”), this didn’t take away from the fact that the chicken was cooked to perfection. Every bite was tender and juicy, so much so that the meat would fall off the bone if turned upside down!
The Kalbi Quesadilla was loaded with cheese and Kalbi, and did not disappoint. The only thing we would point out is that it tasted a lot like a regular steak quesadilla, not necessarily a bad thing, but not Kalbi either.
The Balsamic Onion Sliders might have stole the show. With the contrasting tastes of the bitter blue cheese and the sweet hawaiin bread buns (oh, did we forget to mention that earlier? Well, we loved the twist it added!), the flavor of each bite resulted in a delightful kick.
Last but not least, the Würstche plate. This plate featured one link of Bockwurst, Knackwurst, Bratwurst, and Spicy Kielbasa on a bed of grilled onions and peppers. Each link brought it’s own punch and crunch (literally), but the one that stole our heart (and probably always will) was the Spicy Kielbasa.
When we decided to throw in the towel, we weren’t only stuffed, we were also satisfied and entertained by our surroundings. We definitely circled this place on our list of places to go back to, if not for anything else, just to throw back a few beers and catch a game or two. However, the Peanut Butter Sliders will definitely be a good motivator to return as well (Yep, you heard right…Peanut Butter Sliders!).

Best Burger in America?
Looks like Underground Food favorite, Umami Burger, isn't so "underground" anymore with its supersonic public exposure. If we couldn't convince you the first time around, check out GQ Magazine's article featured on Shine from Yahoo! They rave about the AMAZINGNESS of the Umami experience and question whether or not it could possibly be the best burger in all of America. "It's half beef and half beyond belief."
Do yourselves a favor and give it a try already! You be the judge.. IS it the BEST burger in America?
It's nearly impossible to capture the true essence of this burger through words. It's pretty much out of this world. You'll thank us later...
